Associate Artist Programme

The first iteration of our Associate Artist programme ran from January - November 2021 with support from Arts Council England, East Street Arts and Counterpoint Arts. The programme, co-created with six artists from migrant backgrounds, aimed to develop their artistic practice by offering mentorship, professional development and the chance to create two commissions: ‘Walk With Us’, a soundwalk as part of our ‘Sit With Us’ project and ‘Flock’, a collection of short digital pieces.

Associate Artists have continued to work with Mafwa in 2022, contributing to the development of future creative projects.

2021 Associate Artists: Anne, Emily, Mahshid, Masego, Noksha, Iman

What did the programme include?

- Monthly 1-1 professional development mentoring

- Regular artistic workshops

- Support with developing artistic practice

- Opportunity to create and showcase commissioned pieces of work

- Developing a portfolio in the UK context

- Working with a cohort of peers

Being an Associate Artist brought something out of me, and helped me to express something I haven’t been able to express before.

An evaluation of the first iteration of the Associate Artist Programme, delivered by Joanna Jowett, took place between January and November 2021. The evaluation assessed the impacts of the programme in order to shape Mafwa’s future work. These findings can also be used to inform work done to widen arts provision and support migrant artists by other organisations in the sector.
