Low Carbon Chinatown x Lincoln greeners sustainable gardening

  • Roxby Community Garden Roxby Close Leeds United Kingdom (map)

Compass Arts resident artist ‘Ling Tan’ presents ‘Low Carbon Chinatown’. Originally commissioned by London-based arts organisation, Kakilang, the project is heading up north this August 2023 to explore the East and Southeast Asian food culture of Leeds.

Using a love of food and the power of a shared meal as a catalyst for meaningful conversations, Ling has partnered with Mafwa as part of a series of 3 workshops she is hosting this summer.

On Mon 7th August, Ling will be hosting a group food-tasting session co-led by Leeds-based chef, Mr Chiu at Beeston Village Community Centre.

On Tuesday 8th August, Ling will be joining the Lincoln Greeners to explore the Roxby Community Garden vegetable beds and introduce participants to some of the edible plants that can be grown right here in Leeds. This discussion-based session will address how you can incorporate these ingredients into your favourite Chinese recipes to reduce their carbon footprint and of course, maximise their flavour.

Finally, you and a plus one of your choice are invited to a sit-down Chinese meal at Patrick Studios on Sat 26th August, lovingly prepared by Mr Chiu.

All activities, including the meal, are free.

Suitable for ages 8+

This event is part of ‘Flourish’, Mafwa Theatre’s programme of summer activities and events designed to bring the vibrant communities of Lincoln Green together and celebrate the official launch of the Roxby Community Garden. This is the culmination of 2 years of work to transform a disused playground into a space for residents to play, perform and grow in.

Flourish will showcase work by local and national artists exploring our relationship with nature and the importance of sustainability, community and creative expression. The Roxby Community Garden has been created in partnership with Leeds City Council with support from Veolia Environmental Trust, Horticon, Leeds 2023 and Arts Council England.
