Developing “Damya”

In July, we spent a week with an absolutely fantastic creative team, conducting research and development for our next performance…Damya

The team included 4 Mafwa Theatre Associate Artists, which it has been an absolute pleasure to join on their journey since 2021 when they embarked on a year-long programme of professional development with us.

What we did

We worked with Hannah Sibai to think about the set design for the piece.

We worked with Jummy Faruq on puppetry skills and how we will use puppetry in the piece.

We made quickfire puppets, read children’s books and without giving away too much, researched flight paths and nests!

We played together, creating characters, stories, interrogating themes and the reasons for making the play.

We worked with Madiha Ansari to think about family audiences and who the performance will be for.

We worked with Rob Bentall on creating a unique sound for the performance.

Stay tuned for Damya news & updates!

Thank you to the project funders Arts Council England and to Leeds Playhouse for providing the space for our week of creativity!
